If your M1 MacBook refuses to power on, don't panic (yet!). Here are some steps you can take to diagnose and potentially resolve the issue:
1. M1 Macbook Won't Power On - Check for Physical Damage:
Inspect the exterior: Look for any visible signs of damage, such as cracks, dents, or liquid spills. Liquid spills can cause shorts in the motherboard - if this has happened don’t worry, it can be fixed!
Examine the charging port: Ensure it's free of debris or bent pins.
Check your charger: Is it warm? Is the bottom of the laptop warm? Warm will signify the unit is getting power.
2. Force Quit Applications: (If your laptop has come on)
Hold the power button: Press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the Apple logo appears.
Release the power button: Let go of the power button when the Apple logo appears.
3. Reset the SMC (System Management Controller):
Shut down your MacBook: Ensure it's completely powered off.
Press and hold: Simultaneously press and hold the power button, left Shift, left Control, and left Option keys for 10 seconds.
Release the keys: Let go of all the keys.
Power on: Press the power button to start your MacBook.
4. Check the Battery:
Connect to a power source: Plug your MacBook into a reliable power outlet.
Monitor the charging indicator: If the charging indicator light is not illuminating, there might be an issue with the battery or charging circuitry.
5. Safe Mode Boot:
Power on: Press and hold the power button.
Release and hold: As soon as the Apple logo appears, release the power button and immediately press and hold the Shift key.
Continue holding: Keep holding the Shift key until the login screen appears.
If your MacBook starts in Safe Mode, it suggests that a third-party app or software update might be causing the issue. Try removing recently installed apps or reverting to a previous macOS version.
6. Reset NVRAM (Non-Volatile Random Access Memory):
Shut down: Ensure your MacBook is completely powered off.
Press and hold: Simultaneously press and hold the power button, Command, Option, and P keys.
Release the keys: Let go of all the keys when you hear a second chime.
7. Seek Professional Help:
